“Fascinating, if grisly”- The Daily Mail “Unsettling documentary” - The Independent
(1 x 60' Channel 4 2000)
From their small office in Pretoria, Colonel Kobus Jonker and Captain Riette Everton head up the only police Occult Crimes Squad in the world. Originally set up to investigate widespread witchcraft amongst black communities, following the end of the apartheid, they find themselves battling an upsurge in grisly crimes perpetrated by white Satanists. Some believe that the spike in Satanism amongst white Afrikaners, who often hold the strict Calvinist beliefs of the Dutch Reformed Church, can be attributed to fact that their worldview had been upended by Nelson Mandela, who they saw as the Devil incarnate, becoming their President.
At the heart of the film is chilling murder case in which a man convinced his lover, who had an interest in the occult, to murder his wife under the delusion that she was taking part in an elaborate ritual in which they wold bring the wife’s spirit back through a child. But along the way Kobus and Riette also investigate cases of baby-snatching and grave robbery.
